Joan Jennes Smargiassi, 92, of Eynon, died Wednesday morning March 2, 2022, at Allied Hospice Center, Scranton.  She was preceded in death by her husband, John Smargiassi, who died October 11, 1991.

Born in Dickson City, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Estelle Stasium Jennes.  Joan was a graduate of Dickson City High School.

After her marriage to John, they moved to Eynon, PA where she lived since 1949.  A member of Christ the King Parish she joined the Confraternity of Christian Mothers.  Joan worked in local politics where she hoped to aid politicians to improve the lives of the working class.

She loved the elderly and became a part-time caregiver to some she felt needed special care.  A great cook she shared many special recipes with friends and family.  Before her retirement, she earned a living working in the long-forgotten garment industry.  Joan was a member of the ILGWU and was active in singing and dancing in shows produced to entertain at convention centers in Miami, FL, Atlantic City, and New York City.  She had a short extremely fun-filled career as a model wearing a mink bikini and was voted Ms. Pocono Downs.

Joan was a member of the Wildwood Polka Club a fun group of people who loved Polka dancing.  Her community was important and when Eynon celebrated their centennial in 1996, Joan stepped up and organized a group called the Silver Belles, a very active group of devoted women with Joan as President.  She was a charter member and past president of the Ladies Auxiliary to Wozniak-Povloski Post and a social member of Shopa-Davey Post 6082, Peckville, and the Michael Steiner American Legion Post 411, Jessup.

She is survived by two sons, John “Jack” Smargiassi, and companion, Ann, Montdale, and Brian Smargiassi, Mesa, Arizona; three grandchildren, Jodi Lyn Winters, Kera Mizok, and husband, Robert, and Jared Smargiassi, and wife, Pamela; four great-grandchildren, Shayne Mizok, Cody Smargiassi, Charles Smargiassi, and Walter James Smargiassi; a niece Joan felt was her third sister, Carol Kuzmick, and her deceased husband, Harry Kuzmick.  They would entertain their favorite Cioci Joan to dinners several times a month and acted as caregivers when she needed help.

Joan was preceded in death by two sisters, Helen Jennes and Agnes Morohovech, two brothers, Frank and Joseph Jennes, a daughter-in-law, Ann Marie Smargiassi.

The funeral will be Monday at 9:30 a.m. from the Frank T. Mazur Funeral Home, Inc., 601 Dundaff St., Dickson City with a mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Mary’s Czestochowa  Church, Eynon.  Friends may call Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.   Interment St. Francis Cemetery, Eynon.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Rd, South Abington Twp., PA 18411.  To leave an online condolence visit the funeral home website.
