Jessica Rutkowski, 37, of Spring Brook Township died June 30th at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Allentown, after fighting a courageous two-year battle with cancer.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of Julie Shelesky Rutkowski and the late Bill Rutkowski.  Jess was a graduate of Mid Valley High School, class of 2002, and Lycoming College.

Jess was a marvelous mother who was adored by her three children.  There was no place Jess would rather be than with them doing the myriad of activities they enjoyed together.  Jess was a thoughtful and generous person who instilled in her children to be kind to others and to do the right thing.  Her children are wonderful people because of the example she set.  As one example, Jess started a foundation to help and support others afflicted by her specific type of cancer.

Jess was an avid athlete and continued playing softball until recently when her cancer progressed.  She was an enthusiastic fan of all of her kids’ sports teams as well as the Philadelphia Eagles and Penn State Nittany Lions.

Jess was a staunch member of the Democratic party, serving as vice-chairwoman of the 118th district and member of the Lackawanna and Pa state democratic committee.

Surviving are her three children; Dylan, Rylee, and Liam O’Neill; her devoted mother Julie Rutkowski, loving brother Bill Rutkowski, maternal grandmother Leocadia Shelesky, and former spouse Sean O’Neill.  Jess had many aunts, uncles, and cousins who adored her, as well as many friends, some of whom she considered family, who loved her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her doting father, Bill.

Jess’s family would like to thank the staff of Lehigh Valley hospital, especially Dr. Nair, who took extraordinary care of Jess.

Jess’s funeral will be Thursday, July 8th, at the Frank T.
