Irene Hubiak, 97, Dickson City, died Tuesday morning December 8, 2015  at home in the care of her loving family and she was preceded in death by her husband of 73 years, Peter, in March of 2013.

Born in Scott Twp., she was the daughter of the late Akym and Orena Bodniewicz Matechak and she was a member of St. Andrew’s Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, Blakely. She was educated in Scott Twp. Schools and prior to retirement she was employed by Romar Manufacturing in the garment industry.

Irene was “the best” mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who loved her church and practiced her faith every day of her life. She was a founding member of St. Andrew’s Church, who worked tirelessly at any job that was needed for the church to succeed. All children brought “Little Baba” great joy, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A true sports fan, she attended many professional events in Scranton and Wilkes Barre and regional amateur games. On TV, she was a fan of Philadelphia teams. A superb cook and baker of a variety of foods, especially Ukrainian dishes, any visitor to her home was offered her delicacies. Her skills were not limited to homemaking, she would grab a hammer or shovel and complete home projects beside her husband. A woman of bountiful energy, made her a motivator for all family members. She loved her flower gardens, especially the roses, and making hand crafted Christmas ornaments and Polka dancing. Her memory will be eternal.

She is survived by a son, William, Upper Black Eddy; daughters, Sandra Kuzmick and husband, Gerald, Berkeley Heights, NJ and Irene Herold and husband, William, Greenfield Twp.; grandchildren, Akym Kuzmick and wife Jessica, Tamara Kuzmick Martorana and husband, Stephen, Orena Herold VanBenthuysen, and husband, David, William Herold and wife, Jennifer; eight great grandchildren, Stephanie and Juliana Kuzmick, Kyle and Austin Martorana, Doug and Drew VanBenthuysen, Madeline and Will Herold; sister, Anna Schlasta, Heart Lake; sisters in law, Irene Gattuso, Pittston and Juliann Matechak, Scott Twp., Marian Hubiak, Baltimore, MD; and a brother in law, John Hubiak, TX; many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by sisters, Mary Matechak, Nancy Anuszewski; brothers, Daniel, Neftode, William, Stephen, Bertis, Victor and Samuel Matechak.

I have only known Irene for about 7 months. She was a wonderful lady and a beautiful family who took good care of her. May they know God's loving presence at this sad time in their lives.
