Barbara A. Szewczyk, 90, of Olyphant, passed peacefully in her favorite spot, “her recliner” on Thursday, November 10th, 2022 at home. Sometimes it could be easier to move a mountain than to get her out of that chair.

Born in Dickson City, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Helen Kozloski Wojciechowski, a graduate of Dickson City High School, class of 1950, and graduated from Anthracite Business School in 1951. Barbara was a member of St. Mary’s Visitation Church, Dickson City where she was a former president of the Christian Mother’s Society. She was employed by Bognecht’s MFG, Dickson City, Daystrom, becoming one of the first female supervisors, and retiring from Grumman in 1983.

Barbara was a true matriarch who kept the family together. She thought there was nothing more important than family and she instilled that in all her children and grandchildren.

Barbara was a good cook, but an even better baker. She was ready to supply an overabundance of food for every family get-together. Not only would she provide the food, but also the entertainment with her unyielding wit that was with her to the very end. Undoubtedly, she will be dearly missed.

The family would also like to thank the Traditional Hospice nursing staff for the compassionate care they provided for Barbara in the past year.

Barbara is survived by her three children; son James and wife Maria, Dickson City, daughters Donna Tratthen and husband Billy, Olyphant, and Patricia Mushel and husband Robert, Hyde Park, NY; her grandchildren, Jason Mecca and wife Courtney, Attorney Christopher Szewczyk and wife Nicole, Eric Mushel, Amanda Forgione and husband Franco, Jessica Coppolino and husband Mike, and Tyler Tratthen; great-grandchildren Reagan and Reece Mecca, Roman, Carmen, and Dean Forgione, and Carter Coppolino; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Dolores Hordichuk.

Celebrate Barbara's life with a short message, photo or video!

The world is a little less bright. Ciochi Barbara was such an important person in our lives growing up. She was ALWAYS there and I knew I could always count on her. From sharing family recipes and keeping me up on family news. To making cookies for my bridal shower and both baby showers, to literally saving my wedding dress. … “The year we got married there was a drought, no rain for months and it started POURING for hours , and right as I need to be at church!! I was so upset, and Ciochi came to the rescue!! She came up with an idea like only she could … She went and got a big huge “green“ garbage bag (we didn’t have white back then ) cut two holes in and told me to step in.. omg it was pure genius!! and I looked totally ridiculous, but it worked! “ We laughed about it and laughed about it for years!!! I will miss you…❤️❤️❤️🥰😍
